YOUR QUARTERLY FRAUD FOCUS
The Federal Trade Commission issued an alert about a recent surge in tax refund scams targeting individuals through email and texts. These scammers are posing as IRS representatives, sending messages regarding a "tax refund" or "tax refund e-statement."
Here's what you need to know to stay protected:
1. BE CAUTIOUS. The IRS will not contact you via email, text or social media to get personal or financial information. Even if it looks official, it isn't them.
2. AVOID CLICKING LINKS. Do not click on any links in suspicious messages. These links could lead to malware being installed on your computer or phone, potentially resulting in identity theft.
3. REPORT SUSPICIONS. If you have clicked a link in a suspicious message or shared personal or financial information, report it to us immediately so we can take additional steps to protect your account. You should also report instances of scams, even if you haven't lost money, to the FTC at ReportFraud@FTC.gov.
