YOUR QUARTERLY FRAUD FOCUS
Donations play a crucial role when our communities face hardship or natural disaster. They provide essential support for relief efforts, helping to rebuild lives and restore hope. But with so many charities and fundraising sites out there, how can you ensure your generosity truly makes an impact?
The Federal Trade Commission has recently issued a warning about charity scams that have duped individuals into sending funds to fraudsters, not those in need of help.
Before donating, keep these tips in mind:
1. RESEARCH. Before donating to any cause, research the organization. Check their social media and sites like the Better Business Bureau and Charity Watch.
2. AVOID UNUSUAL PAYMENTS. Legitimate organizations will never
ask for donations in gift cards, cryptocurrency or wires. Insisting on cash donations is also a red flag.
3. BEWARE OF CROWDFUNDING. It's hard to verify legitimacy on
crowdfunding sites. If you choose this route, check to see whether the platform verifies requesters. Remember, donations made through these sites are usually not tax-deductible.
If you encounter a scam, remember to report it, even if you haven't lost money, to the FTC at ReportFraud@FTC.gov. For extra protection, we offer identity recovery services for as low as $2 per month.

PASS DOWN PROSPERITY
Passing down prosperity or generational wealth—money and assets passed down through families—is vital for a strong community. However, many barriers, including race, gender, and income, keep people caught in a cycle of debt, preventing them from creating a lasting financial legacy.
Join our partner GreenPath Financial Wellness on January 22 at 10 a.m. for an insightful webinar where you will learn how to make decisions to invest in yourself and the future generation to build a stronger financial future.
